DC’sWonder Twinsfilm was set to start shooting this summer in July, with its release set to be on the HBO Max streaming platform. However, that is now a thing of the past, or at least very, very distant future.

TheDCfilm has been paused for now according to multiple sources. This news is shocking to many because it comes just a month after the confirmation thatRiverdalestarKJ Apa and1883actress Isabel May were set to star in the film as the duo. The film studio had also hiredBlack Adam’s Adam Sztykielto write and direct the upcoming film, with Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey set to produce the film.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that the decision to stop moving forward with the film was made a few weeks back, due to the heads of Warner Bros. Discovery setting a new mandate in place that all DC film projects going forward would be set with a “theatrical-first goal,” andtheWonder Twinsadaptationwas “too niche” in retrospect. It has also been reported that the film’s cost was too high for an HBO Max feature, with theWonder Twinsbudget suspected to fall in the ballpark of about $75 million dollars, with the preferred budget for HBO Max films being around $35 million dollars. This also comes after the Warner Bros. Discovery merger and Discovery head David Zaslav’s pledge to axe around $3 billion dollars at the freshly conjoined company.

Wonder Twinstells the tale of alien siblingsZan and Jayna, who come from the planet Exxor. The twins' power is something new compared to the recent releases within the DC universe. Jayna has the power to shape-shift into different animals and her brother Zan can shift into different moulds of water. These powers are activated as the twins touch their rings together and recite their iconic catchphrase, “Wonder Twins power, activate!”

The duo’s debut was in Hanna-Barbera’s 1977 animated television series titledAll-New Super Friends Hour, where the kids befriended older iconic heroes like Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman. The Wonder Twins have also made appearances in the Super Friends comics and have also appeared in episodes ofSmallville,Teen Titans Go,and The Flash, which seemingly could have helped integrate them into the vast DC hero universe since fans were familiar with the otherworldly siblings.

With the film’s production shut down by Warner Bros., it’s sad to say that aWonder Twinslive-action projectwon’t be heading to the DC universe anytime soon. But with the power of comic fans relaying what they want to see from studios and directors, maybe theWonder Twinsfilm will reactivate down the line with a cinematic debut that’ll do the characters and its audience justice.
