These next few weeks are some extremely exciting ones for gamers, with a ton of highly anticipated games coming thick and fast.Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is certainly one such title, releasing in just a week’s time, and with fan anticipation now hitting an all-time high. While those who pre-ordered the game already have a chance to play a few hours ofModern Warfare 2’s campaign, everyone will need to wait just a little longer for the game’s other modes, but they may be a little disheartened with the game’s Spec Ops launch offerings.

Launching with a full campaign and an expansive multiplayer mode,Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is guaranteed to give players plenty of bang for their buck straight off the bat, but to sweeten the deal even further, Infinity Ward is including a Spec Ops mode. A core part of the originalModern Warfare 2experience, this Spec Ops mode will see two players work cooperatively to achieve certain mission-based objectives. But before fans get too hyped, they should be warned thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Spec Ops modewill launch with just three missions.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Spec Ops Launch Line-Up Needed More

WhenCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2launches on October 28, players will only have three Spec Ops missions to jump into. On paper, this is extremely disappointing. For comparison,2009’sModern Warfare 2launched with a whopping 23 Spec Ops missions, most of which could be played in two-player co-op. However, when fans take a look at how ambitiousModern Warfare 22022’s Spec Ops mode is trying to be, that small number of missions makes a lot more sense.

Each ofModern Warfare 2’s Spec Ops launch missionssounds like it’ll offer a completely different experience. The first mission, for instance, is named “Low Profile,” and sees the players try to infiltrate a hostile town and recover stolen evidence, all while remaining in stealth. The second mission, “Denied Area,” is a vehicle mission that tasks players with speeding through suburban streets to eliminate three SAM turrets before making a thrilling escape back to the exfil chopper. The final mission sounds completely different from the other two. It’s named “Defender: Mt. Zaya,” and tasks players with defending against waves of increasingly tougher enemies, with breaks in between to purchase killstreaks and armor.

All three of these launch Spec Ops missions seem as though they’ll offer players completely different types of gameplay, which is something that the Spec Ops missions from the originalCall of Duty:Modern Warfare 2had trouble doing. It also sounds as though the scope and scale of each of these missions is far greater than fans have seen from the series thus far. While there may only be three missions on launch, it seems likely thatModern Warfare 2’s Spec Ops mode will end up being a surprisingly complex, engaging set of missions.

That being said, it does seem a little odd thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is introducing a whole class system to its Spec Ops modewhen there are so few missions. There will be three classes available on launch: the Assault, Medic, and Recon kits. Each of these kits comes with a different set of abilities and weapons, and is designed to encourage team play. A particularly odd note is that there’s a whole progression system in place for these kits, with each rank unlocking new weapons and gadgets to use in the Spec Ops. Hopefully, these kits can add some replayability toModern Warfare 2’s Spec Ops mode, as it’s going to be a few months before any of the game’s Spec Ops Raids are added.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2launches on October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
