Bethesda Softworks announces ZeniMax Online Entertainment’s first majorThe Elder Scrolls Onlineexpansion,Morrowind, which also adds the Warden class.
ZeniMax Online Studios today announced the first major expansion to its 2014 MMO,The Elder Scrolls Online. It’s time to return to Morrowind. The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowindis a prototypical MMO expansion, featuring a large new land for players to quest and adventure. Additional features include the addition of all new class, the Warden, the new Battlegrounds PvP mode, and of course, an expanded story campaign.Morrowindwill come with the pricing of a prototypical expansion as well.
According to publisher Bethesda,TheElder Scrolls Online: Morrowindwill be availablethrough several different editions. Both the Upgrade Edition ($39.99) and the Digital Collector’s Upgrade ($59.99) allow current owners ofThe Elder Scrolls Onlineto acquireMorrowindwithout paying for the based edition of the MMO as well. Note that while the Collector’s Editions oftheMorrowindexpansionall inherently include the Discovery Pack pre-order bonus, any pre-order of any edition will include the pack. The pack itself includes a Warden costume, a Dwarven War Dog pet, treasure maps, a Dwarven Crown Crate, and experience scrolls. Also note that the contents of the Digital Collector’s Upgrade are the same as the Digital Collector’s Edition, sans the base game.
The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind’s announcement may come as a surprise to many. After all, the gamehad a rough initial launchthat resulted in a rather significant end-game overhaul and a transition to a buy-to-play MMO with optional subscription. Yet, since that transition,The Elder Scrolls Onlinehas seen an increasing number of players pick up the game. The micro-expansions likeThieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood, the Crown microtransaction shop, and the optional subscription have givenThe Elder Scrolls Onlinelife.
It’s not necessarily surprising that ZeniMax Online decided to next purse a full-sized expansion.Final Fantasy 14andWorld of Warcraft both have found success with major expansions, though they each employ required subscriptions.Guild Wars 2is also a buy-to-play title and it had measured success witha full expansion,Heart of Thorns. If anything, the current MMO landscape shows that MMO players will take new content in any form.
The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowindexpansion is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC starting June 6.
