Summary
TheSpider-ManspinoffSilk: Spider Societyfrom Amazon has been at the center of controversy at the streamer, which might indicate worrying news for fans looking forward to Cindy Moon’s solo series.
Silk: Spider Societywas announced as a collaborationbetween Sonys Spider-Verse team and Amazon Studios. Silk has long been a popular fan-favorite spider-person, even more so at times than many of the interesting characters featured prominently in the popular Spider-Verse films. Despite kicking off early production, the series would halt along with the rest of the industry due to the WGA strike.

The strikes have since ended, but despite theSilk series billed to launch several live-action Spider-Man spinoffsfor Amazon, fans will seemingly have a much longer wait than anticipated ahead for the series. The Anklerreports that the WGA had sent strongly worded communications to Amazon addressing the studio’s decision to keep in-progress projects on ice, includingSilk: Spider Society. Although the scope of the WGA’s objections isn’t clear from the outside looking in, the situation is serious enough that the guild hinted at potentially taking legal action against the company regarding the delays.
According to The Ankler, “the WGA accuses Amazon of violating the agreement that ended the strike by not reopening writers’ rooms to series including the Marvel and Sony co-productionSilk: Spider Societythat were initiated before the WGA strike started in early May.” The report alleges thatSilk: Spider Societyis just one of several shows that Amazon, whose current content strategy includesreimagining the classicPoltergeistas a TV seriesfor MGM+, has similarly put on ice despite being in progress before the WGA strikes caused production delays. The reason this decision was made when production is being restarted as quickly as possible across the industry is perplexing, especially since it seems to be a matter of great importance to the Writers Guild that these projects resume production.
WhileSilk: Spider Societygot some fans asking who Cindy Moonwas, others have been waiting for this adaptation for quite some time, with the character’s first appearance in 2014 leaving an impression on parts of the fanbase. Additionally, the series was chosen to lead the charge for more Spider-Man spinoffs, making it an essential part of the reworked streaming strategy that Amazon has been working on for a while. Marvel comics fans are also invested in the idea, as Spider-Man has some of the most well-liked supporting characters in the comics industry who have yet to get a chance to shine in live-action.
It will be interesting to see what comes ofSilk: Spider Societyand whether or not the WGA’s threat of legal action will be followed through. While Amazon continues to offer more content and value for streamers, includingfree advance screenings and more for Amazon Prime members, failing to make good on collaborative projects with high fan interest is likely to have the opposite effect.
Silk: Spider Societycurrently has no official release date.
