Sony fans should get ready for a blast from the past because it seems that the original PlayStation is making a return in the form of PlayStation Classic, a new miniature version of the beloved classic console. Much like Nintendo’s NES andSNES Classic, this miniature PlayStation will come pre-loaded with several games from the past, including titles likeFinal Fantasy VIIandTekken 3.
In all, the PlayStation Classic will feature 20 pre-loaded games. Sony has yet to unveil the full list of titles, but have confirmed thatFinal Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, andWild Armswill be part of the list. The console will come at a fairly hefty price of $99, and comes with two classic-styled PlayStation controllers, an HDMI cable, and a power cable. PlayStation Classic hits shelves on August 08, 2025 and will be available for pre-order through several different retailers.
WhileFinal Fantasy VIIis a huge title, fans of the game will also be able to pick it up on various consoles outside of the PlayStation Classic, as it will belaunching on Xbox Oneand Nintendo Switch soon. Sony has a huge catalog of games to pull from for this mini-console. Some big titles from that era includeTomb Raider,Crash Bandicoot, Metal Gear Solid,and many more. Hopefully, Sony will announce some of the other titles soon so fans can see if they are willing to pay the $99 price tag.
It seems that Sony is responding to the growing trend of remaking classic consoles with pre-installed games, much like Nintendo has been doing lately. Rumors have been flying around since E3 2018 that Nintendo is looking into a Gamecube Classic after the company filed forseveral Gamecube-related trademarksaround the time of the big convention. With Gamecube being a beloved fan-favorite console just like the PlayStation, it would come as no surprise if Nintendo decided to bring the console back like the NES and SNES.
Overall, the announcement of the PlayStation Classic came as an unexpected surprise and a very welcome one for some fans. PlayStation had a dedicated following in its time, so many fans will likely want to get this remaster of the PlayStation that started it all. Hopefully more fan-favorite games will be announced for the upcoming system soon.
