After more than a decade,Skyrimis definitely starting to show its age, but thankfully, mods are available to help and a new one overhauls the game’s dungeons to give them a gorgeous 4K aesthetic. That’s not to say the vanilla game isn’t still pleasant to look at.The Elder Scrolls 5has some beautiful locations, from Markarth, the city built into a mountain, to the Throat of the World, the highest point in the whole province. Even the dungeons themselves can be quite pretty.

As a series,The Elder Scrollsis famous for its wealth of dungeons, going right back to 1994’sArena. From tiny dank dwellings to cavernous underbellies teeming with enemies and treasure, no fan of the franchise can help but explore the myriad of dungeon-esque interiors that have become synonymous with Bethesda’s fantasy games. Of course, they’re designed to look a little uninviting, with cobwebs and low lighting, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be in some way beautiful in their own right.

That’s where Nexus Mods user XilaMonstrr comes into the picture. In a recent upload on the site, the modder decided to give the dungeons ofSkyrima much-needed facelift with high-resolution textures. The result is quite something, with a number of screenshots showing just how detailed the mod actually is, making these otherwise dingy locales actually look quite appealing. It should be said that this is an improved version of a previous mod by T4GTR34UM3R, with this new release upping the qaulity from 1K and 2K up to 4K. XilaMonstrr also says that the mod is standalone, includes meshes, and doesn’t require any other modifications to be installed.

There are plenty ofmods forSkyrimthat overhaul the graphics, which means the 2011 RPG can continue to look more modern as the years go by. Visuals are certainly not everything when it comes to gaming, butTES5was once lauded for its stunning aesthetics which, though still impressive today, have obviously aged over the past 11 years.

Graphics aside, Bethesda’s release is still having a huge impact even now. It’s gone down asone of the most influential open-world gamesof the modern era, with its vast landscape and deep lore, not to mention the memes that were inspired by the RPG pretty much from day one. It will be interesting to see whetherThe Elder Scrolls 6will leave such a legacy behind.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimis available for PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
