The PokemonWorld Championship is ending on a bittersweet note with the franchise saying goodbye to Gen 8 of the mainline series, but this is also a great time to letPokemon Scarlet and Violetshine with some new content. The Pokemon Company only released three trailers in the span of six months for the Gen 9 games, but today’s closing ceremony was expected to include some form of news aboutPokemon Scarlet and Violet. This came in the form of a short trailer that went over several interesting bits about how battles look like in the upcomingPokemongames, as well as a new critter altogether.

The trailer started with a showcase of the battle screen forPokemon Scarlet and Violet, and then immediately revealed a brand-new critter that’s called Cyclizar, a Dragon/Normal hybrid that happens to be the pre-evolution of bothKoraidon and Miraidon. Cyclizar has a similar design to that of the two box Legendaries by having motorbike-like features, and it clearly shares the same base type as both Koraidon and Miraidon, with them being Dragon/Fighting and Dragon/Electric, according to leaks.

Cyclizar also has a new move that will likely be shared by otherPokemon available inPokemon Scarlet and Violet– Shed Tail. This move creates a substitute, much like the homonymous move Substitute, but it also allows the user to switch out of battle, letting another pocket monster in the party take its place. This is the safest way to switch Pokemon ever introduced to the franchise, and it could see a lot of play in tournaments.

The trailer focused once again on the Terastal phenomenon and how it can be used in battle to prevent supereffective damage or prevent damage altogether, which is shown in the trailer via a Tyranitar Terastallizing into a Ghost-type to avoid a Fighting move. Speaking of Terastallization, the trailer also revealed thatPokemon Scarlet and Violetwill include a STAB movethat adjusts its typing to match that of the Pokemon’s Tera-type. This mode is called Tera Blast, which deals either physical damage or special damage depending on the user’s stats.

The trailer doesn’t show new evolution lines, however, which seems like a missed opportunity for The Pokemon Company. Most of the evolution lines currently known in Gen 9 are from leaks, one of which went overPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s new “Kamen Rider” Bug-typeand its type combination allegedly being a new one never used before. The official website forPokemon Scarlet and Violethas been updated with today’s information, and it’s likely that a fifth trailer will come sometime in September, even though this hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violetrelease on November 18 on Nintendo Switch.
