There once was a time whenKillzonewas one of Sony’s top gaming franchises. However, there hasn’t been a newKillzonegame released since 2013’sKillzone: Shadow Fall, which was a launch title for the PS4, and Guerrilla Games has lately been focused entirely on theHorizonseries. Those holding out hope that Sony may still return to theKillzonefranchise at some point soon may want to rein in their expectations, as the franchise’s official website has been shut down.
Those that attempt to visit the officialKillzonewebsite will be treated by a message explaining that, from now on, it will redirect to the PlayStation website instead. The message says that this change will not impact the online multiplayer modes in theKillzonegames, and players will still be able to get ranking data and statistics in bothKillzone: Mercenaryon PS Vita andKillzone: Shadow Fall. However, it is no longer possible to create or manageKillzone: Shadow Fallclans, as that was handled through the website.

The message ends withGuerrilla Gamesthanking fans for their enthusiasm and support. It makes no indication that theKillzonefranchise may still return one day, and it doesn’t offer any assurance that the website closure doesn’t mean that theKillzonefranchise itself is effectively dead.
The last time fans heard anything about theKillzonefranchise was back in 2017, whenGuerrilla Games co-founder Hermen Hulsttouched on the subject. Hulst indicated that Guerrilla Games hadn’t made any concrete plans about the future of theKillzonefranchise. However, with Guerrilla Games' next project beingHorizon Forbidden West, it seems safe to say that if a newKillzonegame is a possibility, it will be years before fans hear or see anything about it.
In the years since Hulst’s comments, PlayStation has moved further away fromKillzone. In May of 2020, theKillzonemultiplayer servers were shut down at random for a limited time before being restored. Then just last month, the PlayStation website updated its page about its studios and the franchises they are known for, mentioning Guerrilla Games alongsideHorizonand ignoring theKillzonefranchise completely.
It’s unclear why Sony seems to want to move on from theKillzonefranchise.Killzone: Shadow Fallwas a sales success, selling millions of copies, even though it wasn’t exactly a critical darling. Maybe PlayStation and Guerrilla will return to theKillzonefranchise at some point down the line, but fans shouldn’t hold their breath for an announcement anytime soon.
