Summary

In 2023, players were treated to a plethora of exciting adventures throughout the year. They got to experience a massive fantasy tale throughBaldur’s Gate 3, were brought ona musical journey withHi-Fi Rush, got to swing through the streets of New York inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, and were finally treated to the long-awaitedAlan Wake 2. All of these titles have helped make 2023 one of the best years in gaming, and that is without mentioning the hundreds of indie titles that were released. But even with all of these releases, there was one studio that was oddly missing out this year;PlayStation.

WhilePlayStationreleasedMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, that was really the only major title to come from its many studios. The rest of the year seemed to be focused on bringing various games to PC, re-releasingThe Last of Us, or delivering DLC. The only other major release the studio had wasHorizon: Call of the Mountain, but the market for that was relatively niche as it was a PSVR 2 title. Hopefully, following the lack of grand releases this year, the publisher makes its grand return in 2024 with countless new adventures.

PlayStation Has to Make a Big Splash Once 2024 Rolls Around

PlayStation Has Been Mostly Absent From 2023

This year seems to have been dominated by titles from Xbox Game Studios, Nintendo, and a plethora of other studios. Xbox started the year off strong by shadow-droppingHi-Fi Rushbefore it went on tolaunch titles likeMinecraft Legends,Age of Empires 4,Starfield, andForza Motorsport. At the same time, Nintendo was treating its audiences to a wide variety of experiences, includingThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,Fire Emblem Engage,Pikmin 4, andSuper Mario Bros. Wonder. While many of these titles ranged in quality, they all gave players so much to play this year.

Out of the big three, it really feels like Xbox Game Studios and Nintendo were carrying this year. As both studios were releasing brand-new adventures, PlayStation was in a way taking a step back. This year, the only major release that came from its many studios wasMarvel’s Spider-Man 2. That was a fantastic sequel and may even be one of the best superhero games on the market, but it was also the only thing PlayStation fans got among big-hitters and whole new games. Besides that, they couldexperienceHorizon: Forbidden West’s DLCor check outThe Last of Usagain on PC.

PlayStation is Sitting on a Gold Mine of IPs

It is not like PlayStation has nothing to offer, as it is working on many exciting titles.Insomniac Games is makingMarvel’s Wolverine, the next chapter of theHorizonseries is underway, and Naughty Dog is making a multiplayer game set withinThe Last of Usuniverse. Along with that, many of PlayStation’s studios are working on live-service titles that will likely be revealed over the next couple of years. And there are also many studios, including Santa Monica Studios, who are working on mysterious titles that are allegedly new IPs.

PlayStation has a lot of titles in various stages of production, and hopefully, 2024 will be when it starts to shed light on some of those. WhileMarvel’s Spider-Man 2was great, the publisher not releasing more hard-hitting titles feels odd. There are countless exciting IPs it is sitting on and so many great studios it works with. As long as it ensures these games are top-notch, 2024 could easily be PlayStation’s year if it wanted it to be.
