Without a doubt, Ubisoft is enjoying the success ofAssassin’s Creed OdysseyandDivision 2,with many excited for the latter’s first8-player raid, Operation Dark Hours. Both have improved their respective franchises and garnered praise, yet the crossovers do not end there. It appears that a poster found inDivision 2suggests that the nextAssassin’s Creedcould take on a Viking theme and thus be set in the Viking era and territory (Northern Europe, Iceland, Greenland, Vinland).
Before moving forward, it’s worth mentioning that this is not the first time a Viking theme has been teased forAssassin’s Creed. Prior to the reveal ofOdyssey, concept art from Michele Nucera, a concept artist at Ubisoft Milan, teased the possibility ofAssassin’s Creed Ragnarokthat Ubisoft shut down, more or less. However,Division 2may have revived that since-dead rumor.

ThisDivision 2poster has “Valhalla” written across the top of it and depicts what appears to be a Viking holding the Apple of Eden. Whether this is a generic Viking, some Norse god, Leif Erikson, or a rough drawing of the nextAssassin’s Creedprotagonist cannot be certain, but of course, whether or not this is intended to tease anything at all is uncertain.
This flies directly into the face of the most recent rumor, which suggested the nextAssassin’s Creedcould return to Rome, though this time it would be set at the end of Marcus Aurelius’ reign (circa 193 AD). Considering thatOriginsandOdysseywere set closer to the turn of the millennia, this Rome rumor may be more fitting than the Viking Era (as that is closer to 1000 AD), but Ubisoft could be looking to turn away from the Ancient settings.
Either way, there are various other locations many would like to seeAssassin’s Creedexplore, like Japan or China, both of which have been rumored before. It’s worth mentioning that Ubisoft has taken a multi-studio approach toAssassin’s Creeddevelopment in the past, so any combination of these locations could potentially in the works. That said, players will have to wait until 2020 to likely find out, as it has been confirmed that 2019 will not see the release of a newAssassin’s Creed.
Assassin’s Creed Odysseyis out now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
