We’re less than two weeks away from therelease ofUncharted: The Lost Legacy, but there’s already plenty of interest in what Naughty Dog plans to do next. We know thatThe Last of Us: Part 2will be the next game from the studio, but it remains to be seen what’s coming up after that.

In a new interview, the creative director and writer ofThe Lost Legacy, Shaun Escayg, and Naughty Dog’s director of communications, Arne Meyer, dropped some hints about the studio’s future plans. While they didn’t offer up any specifics, it seems that there’s a lot of excitement among the team.

Naughty Dog new game third-person action

Escayg was cagey about the prospect of futureUnchartedgames followingThe Last Legacy, which itself started life as an expansion forUncharted 4. He suggested that while there are still ample stories and characters to keep the series going, there’s a chance that Naughty Dog might not be at the helm.

“In the future, if it looks like there’s something that really excites us, great,” added Meyer. “But we’re perfectly happy to step away from it.” There’s been some speculation that the studio might be moving on from the series it created, and this seems to imply that this is a definite possibility.

Escayg said that Naughty Dog’s future prospects were “pretty exciting,” and was apparently grinning at the interviewer as he did so. “We don’t know what the future holds, but you’re right, it could be something new, it could be another Uncharted, who knows,” said the developer.

In the past, Naughty Dog produced trilogies of gamesstarring Crash Bandicootand Jak and Daxter, then moved on and handed the reins over to other studios. There’s certainly a clear precedent for the company doing the same thing with regards toUncharted.

At this point, Naughty Dog has been working onUnchartedfor over a decade — and thecritical acclaimbestowed uponThe Last of Usdemonstrates what the studio can do when it’s allowed to pursue an original idea. Sequels are usually a safer bet, but it wouldn’t be too surprising to see the team take on something completely new in the near future.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacyreleases on August 17, 2025 for PlayStation 4.
