The Inception Of Quirks
The first occurrence of quirks was seen when a newborn baby in China radiated light from its body. This was the inception of quirks. It was then that one by one, individuals from all around the world started developing abilities and superpowers which were initially called meta abilities and arenow are known as quirks.
To roughly identify if a person will possess a quirk is by checking if they have an extra joint in their pinky toe. Individuals who have an extra joint are known to be quirkless whereas individuals with just one joint are likely develop a quirk. Although the exact origin of quirks are unknown, it has been speculated that the origin of quirks have also appeared through the spread of an unknown virus carried by mice, but there is no concrete evidence to prove this.

Although the appearance of quirks around the world was a magical one, there was also a negative side to it. Criminals started using their power to commit crimes and hurt the innocent and quirkless. This is when society decided to counter this problem by instigating the first heroes to battle the increasing crime rate. This is also when All for one became the symbol of unity in society. He was able todraw out quirks from someand give quirks to those that wanted them. By doing this he was able to gather a following. Less than 20% of the global population does not possess a quirk while the rest possess quirks.
The 3 Main Quirk Types
Quirks are known to be unique to each individual but can be categorized based on the type of quirk it is. The three main types of quirks are known as emitter, mutant and transformation type. The emitter-type is known to not cause any abnormalities to the quirk user’s body, whereas the mutant-type does lifelong physical abnormality to the body. The transformation-type quirk on the other hand does short-term physicalabnormality to the body.
Transformation
This quirk allows the user to temporarily transform and alter their body in different ways. The transformation can enhance existing features or add features to the user’s body. Although these users are trained to keep their quirks in control, there are certain conditions that needs to be met in order to activate their transformation quirk. For example Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu (Real Steel)explains that his abilityto turn his skin into steel softens if he is unable to consume iron and can quickly become tired if he maintains his steel form for too long. Once this type of quirk is mastered by its user, they are able to use it at will.

In battle, the weakness of this quirk is that it can only be utilized at close-range combat and is not as effective as a user who can use long range attacks. Overuse of this type of quirk also has negative repercussions on the user’s body. Transformation-type quirks can also be classified as a hybrid quirk. As it uses activation and mutant-shape characteristics and is also known as the least common type of quirk. A few of the abilities that fall into this category are dark shadow, scales, steel, hardening, body part duplication and size.
Emitter
The emitter-type of quirks have been known to be the most common quirk type. It is also an activation type quirk that doesn’t change the user’s appearance but rather the properties of things around them. The feature and attributes can either be close range such as Ochaco Uraraka’s zero gravity quirk or long distance such as Shoto Todoroki’s fire or ice quirk. There are also ones that alter material properties and create organic materials. Quirks require a conscious effort to activate. This is why we see pro heroes such as Shota Aizawa (Erasure) putting in alot of concentration touse his quirk for long periods of time.
Emitter-type quirks also has their own weakness. Although users have control over their quirk, it is possible to for them to hurt themselves by overusing their quirk as they are using the strength from their own bodies to activate the quirk. Some emitter-type quirks also are unique to the user such as Mina Ashido’s acid quirk. Other emitter-type quirk users also can alter the properties of things around them. A few examples of emitter quirks are explosion, fire, ice, sugar rush, creation, electricityand much more.

Mutant
Last but not the least is the mutant-type quirk. This quirk causes permanent abnormalities to the users which is most of the time directly related to their abilities and power. This quirk type allows them to execute their quirks more quickly and effectively without the repercussions of overuse due to their form. Most of the time, the mutant-type quirks have been passed down through generations. An example of this quirk is Fumikage Tokoyami and his bird-like head.

Although not considered a weakness, mutant-type quirks cannot be switched off whenever and is usually something that the user has to live with for the rest of their lives. An example of this is Mashirao Ojiro and his powerful and sturdy tail Quirk, which gives him difficulties when it comes to sitting or laying down properly. Mutant-type quirks are also known as “heteromorphs” and are the most discriminated against type of quirk, even by other quirk users as some of them haveappearances that may seem frightening. One of the biggest advantages of mutant-type quirks is that they cannot be canceled or disabled, giving these quirk users a unique edge in any situation.
