When it comes toJohn Cena’s greatest rivalries, few can compare to his seven-year-long feud with Randy Orton. It began on a 2007 episode of Raw when Orton attacked Cena out of the blue, with The Viper being announced as the new number-one contender not too long after. The two men fought on and off over the following years, competing in ten one-on-one pay-per-view matches. There were plenty of great ones, buttheir 2009 Hell in a Cell matchwas arguably the pick of the bunch.

With this in mind, it should come as no surprise that this was chosen forWWE 2K23’s Showcase Mode, which focuses on some of John Cena’s biggest and most memorable defeats. The Viper Strikes isthe 14th and final match of Showcase Mode, placing players into the shoes of The Apex Predator and allowing them to recreate the iconic showdown. Those who are able to complete all 12 Objectives will be rewarded with the Randy Orton ‘09 and John Cena ‘09unlockable Superstars, as well as the Hell in a Cell ‘09 Arena.

Orton didn’t want a wrestling match, and that was made obvious when he Irish Whipped me into the Stairs at ringside!
Throw Cena out of the ring using a Hammer Throw and then throw him into the metal stairs with an Irish Whip.
That was just Step One in his plan of inflicting as much damage as possible!
Deal enough damage to fill the meter in the top left-hand corner of the screen.
Still at ringside, Orton got his hands back on me, looking for a Front Light Grapple!
While facing Cena outside of the ring, press the Circle (PlayStation) or B (Xbox) button followed by Square (PlayStation) or X (Xbox).
Randy was threatened, so he hopped on the Apron while I was still in the ring and blinded me with a Face Scrub on the ropes!
Press the R1 (PlayStation) or RB (Xbox) button to climb onto the Apron. Then, when Cena approaches, press either X (PlayStation) or A (Xbox).
With my vision blurred, Orton got me with a Front Heavy Grapple, looking for his DDT in the ring!
Grab Cena while facing him in the ring and then press the X (PlayStation) or A (Xbox) button while flicking the left analog stick to the right to perform a DDT.
He immediately followed that up with another Front Heavy Grapple, hoping to connect with his Backbreaker!
While facing Cena in the ring, press Circle (PlayStation) or B (Xbox) to grab him. Next, flick the left analog stick down and press X (PlayStation) or A (Xbox).
Orton went out and grabbed a Chair, attacking me with it in the ring two (2) times!
Head outside the ring and press L1 (PlayStation) or LB (Xbox) while standing next to the apron, then select a Steel Chair from the weapon wheel. After grabbing the chair, take it back inside the ring and hit Cena with it twice.
He looked for a Heavy Combo in the ring at this point, trying to rattle my very foundation!
Perform any Heavy Combo. To check Randy Orton’s moves,WWE 2K23players can pause the game and head to the COMBOS menu.
That RKO still had me rocked, so Orton took the opportunity to rub it in the fans’ faces with a Crowd Taunt in the ring!
Press Left on the D-Pad while standing in the ring. It’s better to do this while Cena is still down or out of the ring to avoid taking unnecessary damage.
Orton put me in the corner, and while I was standing there dazed, looked for a big Front Light Attack!
Throw Cena into one of the four corners of the ring using an Irish Whip and then approach him and press the Square (PlayStation) or X (Xbox) button.
I was out cold, nothing I could do, Orton set me up for his dreaded Punt Kick…
With at least one bar on the Finisher meter filled, knock Cena down to the ground and then head into one of the corners of the ring. Once there, press R2 + X (PlayStation) or RT + A (Xbox) to perform Orton’s Punt Kick attack.
… and all that was left was for him to cover me for the pin, and wait for the referee to count to three!
With Cena down in the ring, walk over to him and flick the right analog stick down. If players have dealt enough damage by the time they’ve completed the eleventh objective, they can flick the stick down while Orton is still preparing for his Punt Kick to cue up the pin a little earlier and save some time.
