Summary

After nine months on ice,Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguehas finally reared its head once again. Rather than hide away for the next few months and just hope that everything works out whenSuicide Squadreleases early next year, Rocksteady has decided to get out in front of the game and really showcase what theSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueexperience is all about. A few weeks ago, Rocksteady released its first “Suicide Squad Insider” video, the first in a series that the developer is doing in the lead-up to the game’s February 2024 release, where the devs break down some of the game’s most important story and gameplay elements.

The first of these Suicide Squad Insider episodes was dedicated to giving fans a pretty sizable rundown on the game’s opening hour or so, and what players can expect to be doing for the vast majority of the game. This lengthy trailer gave fans a much clearer look atSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s gameplay, and while it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, fans at least know what they’re getting into now, and according to Rocksteady itself, that’s a game that puts an “Arkham spin on the action shooter space,” which is a pretty loaded thing to say.

Throughout Rocksteady’s first Suicide Squad Insider video, the game’s action-shooter formula is made abundantly clear. The general premise ofSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguesees up to four players take to the streets and skies of Metropolis, blasting away at countless Brainiac foes, attempting to “kill” the Justice League. Each character has their own unique method of traversal, and each character is particularly proficient with certain types of weapons.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s action-shooter inspirationscome through especially clearly with the game’s gear system. Just likeDestiny,Borderlands, or any other popular looter-shooter,Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s central gameplay loop seemingly revolves pretty heavily around different types of gear, including different gun types, each with their varying levels of rarity indicated by a specific color. Players will presumably be unlocking new weapons and gear constantly throughout the game.

Another big action-shooter element that seems to be at the heart ofSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueis the presence of character-specific abilities. Again, much likeDestiny,Borderlands,Warframe,The Division, and many others,Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguegives players four different playable characters to choose from, each of whom has their own unique set of abilities, most of which seem to tentatively categorize them into a usual action-shooter class archetype, such as a tank or an all-rounder.

While a lot ofSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s gameplay doesn’t really resemble aBatman: Arkhamgame at all, and that’s a huge point of disappointment for many fans, there are a few classicArkhamelements that seem to have snuck their way into the game. One of the most intriguing isSuicide Squad’s counter-shot mechanic, where players can counter an enemy attack by quickly shooting at them right before it lands, very similar toArkham’s Freeflow combat counter move.

Suicide Squad’s open worldwill hopefully take some inspiration from Rocksteady’sArkhamgames as well, hopefully being packed with a ton of side activities, some big DC cameos, and some fun collectibles. Of course,Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueis also set in the same universe as theBatman: Arkhamgames, so fans can hopefully expect to see plenty of references to not only the events of the entireArkhamseries, but the widerArkhamDC universe.
