The official reveal ofAssassin’s Creed Redhas been a long time coming, as fans of theAssassin’s Creedseries have been asking for a Japan-centered entry for years. Alongside an official confirmation, Ubisoft announced last month thatAssassin’s Creed Redwill feature two protagonists. The title has quickly become one of the most highly-anticipated entries in the series' history. ThoughAssassin’s Creed Redwas confirmed to be in development only recently, the title’s location was set up over a decade ago when Japan’s connection to the Brotherhood of Assassins was mysteriously referenced in a short cutscene, alongside the settings for bothAssassin’s Creed OriginsandAssassin’s Creed Odyssey.
Assassin’s Creed Redis largely shrouded in mystery. Developer Ubisoft reveals that the title is set during Japan’s feudal period and features two protagonists. The first is a shinobi. Described as a male African refugee, the shinobi protagonist will likely find themselves becoming a member of the Hidden Ones, a precursor to the Brotherhood of Assassins. The second, a female samurai, will presumably be part of a Proto-Templar organization. While no other details have been shared, the title’s narrative will certainly have a big impact onAssassin’s Creedlore, especially considering how Japan’s connection to the Assassins was first revealed.

Japan’s Importance Was First Revealed In Assassin’s Creed 3
Assassin’s Creed Red’s setting will arrive over a decade afterJapan’s significance was revealed inAssassin’s Creed 3.AC3is important for being the final adventure of series protagonist Desmond Miles, whose ancestors were the focal point ofAssassin’s Creed’s earliest titles. Playing as Connor, a half-English, half-Mohawk assassin in Colonial America, players were tasked with navigating the moral gray area between the British and the Colonists during the Revolutionary War, all while partaking in the age-old conflict between Templars and Assassins.
Inthe opening cutscene ofAssassin’s Creed 3,players are shown three symbols: The Eye of Horus, the Omega Symbol, and a Japanese Torri. While most players overlooked them at the time, fans now know that each referred to Hidden Ones from earlier civilizations. The first two were hints atAssassin’s Creed OriginsandAssassin’s Creed Odyssey, respectively, leading to the presumption that their follow-up entry would be set in Japan. However,Assassin’s Creed Valhallawas the next title released, opting for a Norse setting. With the announcement ofAssassin’s Creed Red, fans will finally explore the long-hinted origins of Assassins in Japan.

Assassin’s Creed Red Could Have Series-wide Implications
Assassin’s Creed Redis set to introduce a unique faction ofthe Hidden Ones, as its Feudal Japan setting features protagonists of different cultures and disciplines. Japan practiced profound isolationism during this period, remaining untouched by most foreign political influences. Given that one of the protagonists is a refugee, there are certain to be elements of the outside world that make their way into the narrative. It will also be interesting to see how the influence of the Proto-Templars and Proto-Assassins manifests during the events ofAssassin’s Creed Red,since they are, themselves, foreign in nature. However, if the series' most recent entry is any indication, a greater influence may be the title’s focal point.
Assassin’s Creed Valhallasets the stage for morepowerful forces to appear inAssassin’s Creed Red.Valhallaintroduced the concept that the Isu, aliens older than humanity, have been present throughout history, forming the backbone of human religion. Prior titles revealed that the Isu reincarnated themselves to avoid the Great Catastrophe, butValhallaconnected those reincarnations with the era’s gods. There’s no telling just how the series' newest entries will follow up on this major reveal, especially as it pertains toAssassin’s Creed Red. Fans will need to be patient for these answers, and so many more, asAssassin’s Creed Redis unlikely to get any additional news until after the series' next title,Assassin’s Creed Mirage, releases later this year.
