Gotham Knights, the upcoming confusingly-titled CW series that shares an exact name with an upcoming video game, has just gotten its first official trailer, and it’s got all sorts of goodies for anyBatmanfans out there looking to get a fix. Featuring a decidedly dark storyline clashing with some familiarly witty writing, it feels like something that could helpfully fill a certain void left after the network’s recent cancelations.

The trailer posted by The CW seems to offer a pretty comprehensive look at what fans can expect from the new series. Featuring a young cast oflesser-knownBatmancharacterssprinkled in with some bona fide classics, there’s pretty much something here for everyone. But who exactly are these people? Well, the trailer helpfully clears that up quite nicely.

The trailer starts with Bruce Wayne’s own adopted son Turner Hayes (Oscar Morgan) throwing a party at his old man’s mansion, only to be faced with the shocking news that Bruce has been murdered. This bombshell is delivered by none other thanHarvey Dent (Misha Collins), who also reveals Bruce Wayne’s identity as Batman to the young man. Elsewhere, 3 other youths are brought in for questioning regarding the murder. However, unlike Turner, these three are residents of the less savory side of the law.

After they were supposedly paid to break into Bruce’s office, the trio of Duela (Olivia Rose Keegan),Harper Row/Bluebird (Fallon Smythe), and her brother Cullen (Tyler DiChiara) are busted by police and are among the suspects of his murder. Unfortunately for Turner, he finds out he’s a suspect as well. After being shoved into a cell with the other 3, the group appears to form an uneasy alliance in order to clear their names. Following a daring escape during a prisoner transport, they receive the help of Carrie Kelley (Navia Robinson), Turner’s classmate and the literal Robin to Bruce Wayne’s Batman. As Gotham City descends into chaos, this ragtag team may be its last hope after the loss of the Caped Crusader.

At first glance, this definitely seems like a CW show. But those familiar with some of their more recent offerings may find some of it has a familiar feel to it. This likely isn’t an accident, asthe writers fromBatwomanare also on board forGotham Knights. Some of that signature wit from characters likeBatwoman’s Alice (Rachel Skarsten) can be seen shining through, particularly with Keegan’s Duela. The fact that Duela often goes under the alias of The Joker’s daughter probably has a lot to do with that as well. The rest feels like it’s definitely a CW show, right down to the presence ofSupernaturalstar Collins making an appearance like an old friend.

Gotham Knightslooks like it’ll hit the ground running when it premieres next year. But based on what’s been shown in the trailer, that wait will probably be totally worth it. The series also stars Anna Lore and Rahart Adams as Stephanie Brown/Spoiler and Brody, respectively. Here’s hoping both it and the game of the same name get the reception they deserve.
