In anticipation of the release ofThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, a fan has recreated one of the film’s posters in the style ofSuper Mario 64.

While far from the only video game adaptation in recent memory,The Super Mario Bros. Movieis quite possibly the most anticipated. Nintendo has reached new heights of success in recent years, much of which can be attributed to the massively successfulNintendo Switch which has outsold the Game Boyas well as nearly all other Nintendo consoles. TheMariofranchise, on which the movie is based, is particularly well represented on the Switch through original mainline titles likeSuper Mario Odyssey, rereleases of older games like theSuper Mario 3D All-Starscompilation, and spin-off titles likeMario Kart 8 Deluxe.

With this many prominent games in the series, it should come as no surprise that trailers and other promotional materials forThe Super Mario Bros. Moviehave gained millions of views online. One of the movie’s latest posters features the familiar cast ofMariocharacters against a backdrop of multiple famed locations like Peach’s Castle and Rainbow Road. This poster has gained a lot of traction online and has been recreated in the style ofSuper Mario 64by a fan. It is similar in fashion to another fan work that was a recreation ofthe trailer forThe Super Mario Bros. Moviein the style ofSuper Mario 64.

The artist behind this rendition of the poster is known online as Digimeng. They shared the poster on their Instagram as well as the r/gaming subreddit where it was received warmly by fans. They also added that they plan to make a similarly-styled poster forSonic the Hedgehog. Although primitive by modern standards, the polygonal art style characteristic of Nintendo 64 games is still loved by fans today and was even spruced up by one who developed amod to playMario Kart 64in HD.

Although other games of its era can be hard to play today,Super Mario 64is widely regarded as one of theMariogames that have aged the best. There is still a lot more to be seen fromThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, but fans can likely look forward to seeingSuper Mario 64be referenced at least once. Few games can have the kind of long-standing legacy thatSuper Mario 64has, andThe Super Mario Bros. Moviewill hopefully capitalize on that. Thankfully, gamers will not have to wait much longer to see what the movie has in store.
