The highly anticipated online RPG by Bethesda,Fallout 76, has finally been released this week and with its release, various reviews have started rolling in. Despite the relatively successful Beta tests that took place over the past two months, after its release,Fallout 76has been bombed with negative user reviews on Metacritic, and is currently sitting at an incredibly low user score of 2.4 out of 10.
One of the reasons for the overwhelmingly negative response is that the game is unavailable through Steam, which inevitably caused a lot of displeasure among PC players. The game is also criticised for being empty and boring, forhaving a lot of bugsand glitches despite extensive Beta tests, and there are some complaints over the lack of NPCs in the game. Furthermore,Fallout 76is criticised for its close resemblance toFallout 4,where some fans feel thatFallout 76is simply an extended mod forFallout 4with added online features.
Out of the 313 user reviews on Metacritic, there are 58 reviews that are positive and 8 that are mixed. The remaining 247 reviews are negative. Some of the user comments are that “this game on Xbox One X is full of bugs, full of lags [and] it is constantly freezing, [the] graphics are awful, [and it is] totally boring playing single or multiplayer” and thatFallout 76"is a huge downgrade in terms of quality compared to anything Bethesda has done before."
In addition, the game has also experienced a bumpy start, where PC players were havingissues uninstalling the Betabefore the game’s launch and players also discovered that once entering Appalachia again after launch, achievements and trophies that should have been completed remained locked.
Bethesda definitely tried something completely new withFallout 76, so a few issues post-launchshould be expected. However, this amount of problems is problematic for a game that nevertheless cost many players a lot of money, and many might feel that Bethesda should rather have moved the release date forward instead of releasing a game that is sub-standard.
Fallout 76releases on July 11, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
