The success of the animatedCastlevaniaseries on Netflixhas led producer Adi Shankar to expand his vision. Shankar announced on Friday that, while the third season ofCastlevaniahad been greenlit, he’s also started work on aDevil May CryTV series. And if that wasn’t a wild enough announcement, Shankar also revealed that bothCastlevaniaandDevil May Crywould together form the start of their own multiverse, dubbed the “Bootleg Multiverse.”

Shankar’s confirmations of theDevil May CryTV show and the Bootleg Multiverse were both terse. All Shankar was willing to acknowledge was that he had personally purchased the rights toDevil May Cry, “so the jabronis in Hollywood don’t f*** this one up too.” It’s unclear when thisDevil May Cryshow would arrive or if it’ll be released via a streaming platform likeCastlevania. And while initial reports say the project will be animated none of Shankar’s comments officially confirm that.

Nevertheless, the announcement of aDevil May Cryshow is certain to build hype within the gaming community. It seems like a great choice to fitCastlevania’s mix of style, minimal plot, and excessive violence.

The announcement of aDevil May CryTV series comes during a window where Capcom is trying to maximize hype for the franchise. The franchise has been in stasis for five years, barring the release of DLC, and modern gaming has cooled on the series since its most relevant years in the early 2000s. ButDevil May Cryis coming back withDevil May Cry 5in 2019. With that in mind, it’s possible that this TV show may see a quick production.

As for the nature Adi Shankar’s Bootleg Multiverse, the most important implication is thatCastlevaniaandDevil May Cryare only the start. After all, just two franchises meeting is more of a crossover than a multiverse. That brings up the big rumor from the past weeks that Shankar is working on tying up the licensing for aLegend of Zeldaanimated show. While there’s definitely the possibility that Shankar is just taking advantage of a misplaced rumor, perhaps there is a possibility of making aZeldaseries and tying it into a greater video game multiverse. Who knows what this producer is capable of, after the crazy success of a rated-RCastlevaniaadaptation.
