CrossfireXis shutting down and ending sales completely just one year after the first-person shooter launched on Xbox Game Pass. The troubled history ofCrossfireXwill soon come to its conclusion as ongoing development of game content ceases and servers remain active for a limited time.

Smilegate Entertainment published a news release announcing thatCrossfireXis shutting down completely on May 18, and the game’s sales on the Xbox Store would be halted immediately. As of February 3, purchases made within the last 14 days will be eligible for a refund after submitting a refund request to Xbox Support. Further, no new content will be added to the game such as maps, modes, and camos. The developers encourage players to enjoy all previously purchased and unlocked in-game content beforeCrossfireXservers shut down on May 18. This includesthe single-player component ofCrossfireX, which will also be unavailable after the servers go offline.

An official FAQ forCrossfireX’simpending closure was made available, reiterating many of the details shared within the developer’s latest news release. Smilegate Entertainment statesCrossfireXwas “ultimately not where it needed to be” despite the development team continuously working hard to deliver fixes, new maps, game modes, and content. OfficialCrossfireXsocial media accounts will also cease all activity, and the game’s Discord server will remain active in a limited support capacity.

CrossfireXwas one of Metacritic’s worst gameslast year, and the game’s public perception could not recover at all after the disappointing launch. Moreover, the talented Remedy Entertainment could not develop a worthwhile single-player experience forCrossfireXto help alleviate the multiplayer component’s grievances.

CrossfireX’slaunch issueswere a troubling sign from the start, leading some players to believe the game would live on borrowed time. The sentiment appears to have been well warranted asCrossfireXprepares to shut down permanently this May.
