TheNarutofranchise is renowned for its all-powerful techniques and jutsu, yet the ones that stand out the most are its visual techniques, clearly shifting the power dynamic in their favor. Ranging from the famed chakra-sensing Byakuganto the god-like Rinnegan, the series never fails to deliver with its lineup of unique ocular jutsu. One new addition to these dojutsu is the Tenseigan, a visual jutsu that can rival the likes of the Rinnegan.
The Tenseigan was first introduced inThe Last: Naruto the Movie, depicted as a god-tier technique that is capable of bringing mass destruction. These eyes can only be possessed by the Otsutsuki Clan members, as the prerequisite to awakening the Tenseigan involvesimplanting a Hyuga’s Byakuganinto an Otsutsuki, a process that results in the eyes transforming into the Tenseigan. While the visual jutsu was mostly mentioned in theNarutomovie, there are speculations that it may soon make an appearance in theBorutoseries. Nevertheless, analyzing the Tenseigan can further reveal its raw powers, along with its implications within the series.

The Tenseigan: An Overview
Beingone of the Otsutsuki’s dojutsu, the Tenseigan boasts immense power, one that is capable of ensuing mass chaos. No ordinary human can activate it as the primary requirement for attaining this overarching power is to implant the Hyuga’s Byakugan into an Otsutuski Clan member. Since the Hyuga are the direct descendants of Hamura Otsutsuki, Hagomoro’s younger twin brother, it is speculated that the fusion of these two clans results in a power that is unimaginable.
In terms of appearance, the Tenseigan is quite similar to the Byakugan, but with the addition of a blue pupil that is surrounded by a flower-like iris. It is capable of pulling the moon towards the Earth, even going as far as colliding the two heavenly bodies and causing a cataclysm. The dojutsu also possessespowers similar to the Rinnegan, such as its ability of repulsion and attraction. Furthermore, the Tenseigan allows the user to enter chakra-mode, a divine-like state that gives access to truth-seeking balls and yin-yang release, essentially the same as becoming the Ten-Tails’ Jinchuriki.

The Tenseigan is also capable of giving birth to animated objects, such as a stone golem that is capable of wide-scale meteor attacks, similar to that of Planetary Devastation. With such absurdly powerful abilities that rival that of Kaguya and the other Otsutsuki, it’s safe to assume that the Tenseigan could easily surpass its visual counterparts, even rivaling the Rinnegan.
Wielder of the Tenseigan
There has only been one wielder of the Tenseigan so far, Toneri Otsutsuki, one of Hamura Otsutsuki’s descendants. He was able to artificially awaken the Tenseigan afterstealing Hanabi Hyuga’s Byakuganand implanting them within himself, resulting in a pulsating pain that lasted for a few days, eventually converting the Byakugan into the Tenseigan. Toneri did so with the intention of destroying the planet and using his Tenseigan to rebuild the planet anew.
Although he was eventually defeated and the Tenseigan reverted to the original Byakugan, several of the dojutsu’s capabilities were revealed during the duration Toneri possessed it. Its primary capabilities involved the Byakugan’s chakra sensing capabilities, yet its true strength went beyond that, as it also boasted thepower of attraction and repulsion, the same power that Toneri used to pull the moon closer to the Earth.

However, the Dojutsu’s true power lies behind its chakra mode, giving the wielder the ability to fly and summon animated objects, coupled with thefive nature transformations and yin-yang release. This was the true power that Toneri wished to use in order to destroy the planet. He was further shown wielding a golden chakra sword that was capable of slicing through the moon, a power that can be attributed to the Tenseigan as well.
Implications of the Tenseigan
It’s no secret that dojutsu possess some of the strongest abilities in the series, and only a few can rival their absurd strength. With the Tenseigan’s addition, the series has further fortified the narrative that no power can come close to that of visual jutsu. Considering the Tenseigan’s unfathomable abilities, the only ones that couldrival it are Sage jutsuand tailed-beasts, making every other jutsu obsolete against it. This has also made matters worse for the franchise’s persistent power creep issue.
However, the Tenseigan’s introduction is somewhat justifiable as the dojutsu is able to challenge the already present status quo, dethroning the Sharingan and Rinnegan as the strongest visual techniques. Since the Rinnegan was previously known as the pinnacle of all visual prowess, the Tenseigan has added another layer of intricacy to the power system, shifting the previous narrative ofthe Six Paths power being end-game. For now, there seem to be no signs for the Tenseigan to become a recurring part of theBorutoseries, yet it’s still too early to reach a final conclusion.
