Game developer and publisherGearbox Softwarehas only gained more momentum since it was acquired by Embracer Group in 2021. Recent releases includingTribes of MidgardandTiny Tina’s Wonderlandshave only built excitement for what’s coming next. The good news is thatGearboxhas a lot in store, perhaps even more than expected. In a financial report issued by parent company Embracer Group, it was confirmed that Gearbox has 9 different games in development at the moment.

The statement fromEmbracer Groupis unfortunately light on details. What Embracer says is that Gearbox currently has “nine AAA games” currently in development. Further, that Gearbox is currently actively scaling to meet an ambitious growth plan. That explains why Gearbox has so many games in the works, but also hints that more games could be started at any time. Embracer clearly wants Gearbox to rapidly grow into an industry powerhouse.

Of the 9 games that Gearbox is currently working on, only a handful are currently known. It also depends on whether Gearbox’s publishing partnerships are included, as opposed to just the games that Gearbox itself is developing. 9 games in-house would obviously be somewhat ridiculous, though, so publishing partnerships can be assumed. The one in-house game known to be in development isTales From the Borderlands 2, planned for release in 2022. It’s safe to assume that Gearbox has at least one or two other unannounced projects in development.

As for upcoming games Gearbox is publishing, 3 games are currently planned for release in 2022. Those games areHomeworld 3from Blackbird interactive,Have a Nice Deathfrom Magic Design Studios, andEyes in the Dark: The Curious Case of One Victoria Bloomfrom Under the Stairs. 2 more games are planned for release in 2023 and beyond. The first isHyper Light Breakerfrom Heart Machine and the second isRelic Hunters Legendfrom Rogue Snail.

In total, that’s 6 known games currently being worked on by Gearbox, leaving 3 more left to be revealed. That’s if these 6 games are what Embracer is talking about in the first place. They could be includingDLC forTiny Tina’s Wonderlands, or an expansion forTribes of Midgard, for example. It’ll be interesting to reflect back on this announcement in the years to come.

The big game that everyone is wondering about is, of course, the next major title in theBorderlandsfranchise. The success ofTiny Tina’s Wonderlandshas reinvigorated the community forBorderlands, with hopes that the nextBorderlandsis brave in a similar way. What anewBorderlandsgamemade by a rapidly growing Gearbox might look like is particularly exciting. The future is bright forGearbox Software.
