With today’sBorderlands 3patch Gearbox is delivering on several promises made to the game’s playerbase. First comes the delivery ofBorderlands 3’s first endgame focused content patch, with both Takedown at the Maliwan Blacksite and Mayhem 4 becoming playable. Gearbox also provided a round of endgame balance changes for specific vault hunter builds. But perhaps the biggest, most meaningful change toBorderlands 3is the implementation of new boss-limited pools for loot.
In today’s patch notes, Gearbox acknowledges that the huge change is indeed going through. “All bosses have been updated with new loot pools,” according to the patch notes. That means that every single boss in the game now has a specific pool ofLegendary itemsthat can drop, unique to itself. This will allow players to more efficiently farm for specific Legendary weapons or gear that they want, rather than simply crossing their fingers and farming the easiest boss of their choice.

Gearbox isn’t going to do the hard work forBorderlands 3players, however. Beyond acknowledging that the new patch introduced dedicated loot pools for bosses, no other information was provided. TheBorderlands 3community will have to work together to discover just what Legendary items drop from each boss. It may take days or weeks before an accurate mapping of every Legendary in the game has been created. Just in time forBorderlands 3’s new expansionto launch and shake things up.
TheBorderlands 3communityhas already gotten to work collecting all Legendary drops and where they come from into a large spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is sorted by each gun manufacturer and their respective weapon types. For example, the Torgue Legendary RPG named Hive drops from a rare enemy in The Splinterlands named Princess Tarentella II. Or the Jakobs Headsplosion sniper rifle drops from Manvark, part of a crew challenge in Konrads Hold. The list of Legendary drops is filling up fast.
Dedicated loot pools for bosses is such a perfect plan forBorderlands 3that it’s almost difficult to believe the franchise, not justBorderlands 3, hadn’t implemented the feature long ago. To think thatBorderlands 3playershave been so heavily relying on near-complete RNG to collect their favorite Legendary weapons, to put the finishing touch on their builds, is almost crazy. And that Gearbox was able to decide to implement it and do so in a matter of post-launch months is that much crazier. But the deed is done, andBorderlands 3is better for it.
Borderlands 3is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
