Alear summoning Marth in Fire Emblem Engage

The localization for this game must have been a nightmare, but at least it all seems worth it in the end, asFire Emblem Engageis getting high praise. Fromthe support conversationsto the story cutscenes to the item descriptions, these are some of the best lines in the game.

This list includes spoilers!

8“The Time Has Come!”

This line was said by Alear just as she is about tofuse with Marthin the prologue battle. It’s a very anime-like opening to the game, seeing as how every character goes through a transformation like this. As every character can equip all twelve rings, there are a lot of unique combos to go through. It’s a cool mechanic for a game in this series, even though it might be a little too overpowered. There are a lot of other cool story moments when characters transform for the first time, but this is still one of the best.

7“Come Again?”

This is another great line from Alear that doesn’t sound funny on its own. For context, this is right after she meets Yunaka for the first time. Yunaka is rambling on about a ring and hearing voices in her head, which then prompts this confused “Come again” from Alear.

Yunaka may sound like she is off her rocker, but this section of the story reveals to players howthe Emblem Ringswork. They can’t move or use their powers without a user, but they can call out to people. That’s why Yunaka was hearing voices call out to her.

6“I Am So, So, So Sorry!”

Alear and her comrades eventually March through to the border of Brodia where they are met with hostility. Alcryst, one of the nation’s princes, fires an arrow at them and looks menacing enough. After he finds out Alear is the Divine Dragon, his demeanor changes.

He leaps into the air and then starts apologizing profusely after he lands. Alcryst is a classic sad boy archetype in games and anime. One that lacks confidence even though he is highly skilled. Another great quote inFire Emblem Engagefrom him happens whenever he levels up poorly. “I hope you didn’t waste much time on me.”

5“Abandon Hope, You Will All Die.”

Despite some setbacks, things are going well for the party upuntil Chapter 10. That’s when things take a turn for the worse. Diamant and Alcryst’s father dies, and the group gets their Emblem Rings taken away by Veyle. She then says this line as she summons the evil version of the heroes they had acquired up to that point.

This is about the halfway point, which is a good time for any game to take a dark twist like this. Like any good anime, fans will be wondering how the heroes could possibly get out of that jam after Chapter 10.

4“We’re Retreating, There’s A Difference.”

There is a battlein Chapter 11right after the fight in the castle. Players have to rush Alear toward an end goal, and as long as they can do that, victory is won. However, the game throws an incredible amount of enemies at the player, plus Veyle’s generals, the Four Hounds, start attacking as well.

Thankfully, hope is not completely lost when Lucina and Lyn arrive to join the party. After retreating, Lyn says this line to Alear about the differences between running away and retreating from battle. Retreating is a smart tactical move that is not cowardly at all.

Alear and the gang eventually make it to the next kingdom over, Solm, wherein they meet Prince Fogado. He reveals that they have a ring as well and that Alear can have it. However, when they confront Seforia, his mother, she has no idea where their Emblem Ring is.

That’s when Fogado asks about the “doodad drawer,” which feels out of place ina Japanese RPGlikeFire Emblem Engage. That’s what makes the scene funny, besides the idea that this kingdom would lose such a precious heirloom.

2“For Your Kingdom’s Sake, We Have To Be Strong.”

The final chapters of the game start to become darker for the heroes. Even though Alear and her company are gaining more power via Emblem Rings, they can’t be everywhere at once. For example, after Alfred left his nation, things went poorly.

He blames himself for the destruction, but Alear says this line to him to cheer him up. In the face of darkness, one cannot show weakness. That’s a good translation of what she was trying to get across to the young prince.

1“You Could Technically Give It To Someone, But Why Would You?”

This was not a line said by anyone in the game. It’s actually an item description for the Horse Manure, which serves no purpose in the game other than to be a joke. Manure of any variety is often put into RPGs for the sole purpose of being a joke.

TheDragon Questseries, for example, has been doing this for years as well. The description is almost as funny inFire Emblem Engageas when players try to gift this to a party member. Their reactions are priceless, although not too surprising, almost like they suspect it from Alear.
