Today, DICE and Electronic Arts hosted a livestream to revealBattlefieldV, which not only acknowledged the forthcoming first-person shooter’sWorld War II setting, but also showed the title’s first full-fledged trailer and confirmed its release date. What’s more is that the companies inferred that post-launch content won’t cost players extra money beyond the base game by stating that there will not be a Premium Pass.
As seen in the tweet below from the officialBattlefield VTwitter account, it is stated that the “Tides of War are changing” with DICE and Electronic Arts going on to imply that such features as fresh modes, maps, and rewards will be offered to all players at no additional cost. Additionally, producer Ryan McArthur said during the livestream that starting in November 2018 and running into the early part of next year, the game will begin the exploration of its first chapter of post-launch wares focused on “the fall of Europe”, which will have live events and thematic rewards tied to it.
There’s no doubt that DICE and Electronic Arts' decision to do away with a Premium Pass forBattlefield Vwill attract a huge amount of players to the game. After all, one of the most common complaints about contemporary first-person shooter franchises involves having to drop even more coin on DLC to keep up with the community. So, this should definitely provide a greater incentive for long-time fans and newcomers alike to pick up the sequel.
Beyond there not being a Premium Pass, it will be interesting to see howBattlefield Vwill be looking to set itself even further apart from Activision and Sledgehammer Games' recent foray into the Second World War withCall of Duty: WW2. Of course, fans of DICE and Electronic Arts' first-person shooter series should expect to see much bigger battles, more focused class systems, and a slew of vehicles to commandeer, but it’s also likely that the forthcoming game’s story will help sell it as a more unique property.
Taking all of this into consideration, not only willBattlefield Vbe competing withCall of Duty: WW2in terms of historical authenticity, but also it will be up againstBlack Ops 4, as the latter game launches around the same time that DICE and Electronic Arts' new shooter does. Perhaps, though,Battlefield Vwill have more of an edge in sales this year due to its inclusion of a story campaign alongside multiplayer aspects.
