The next major release in the battle royale space isBattlefield 5’s take on the genre, known as Firestorm. And just mere days away from the launch of the AAA battle royale, a new trailer shows gameplay and goes into more detail than ever before about what players can expect when theyjump into the mode on March 25th.

The titular Firestorm is the name of one of the genre’s signature mechanics: the enclosing circle that will drive players into an ever-smaller region ofthe biggest map ever in aBattlefieldgame. Being the more realistic-focusedBattlefieldfranchise, the circle is a literal ring of fire that will not only consume players who don’t manage to stay within its boundary, but it also has the ability to destroy buildings, structures, and the environment over which it passes.

The trailer touts that Firestorm will featureBattlefield’s signature gunplay, combat vehicles, and destructible environments. That includes 17 vehicles at launch ranging from cars to tractors to tanks, boats, and helicopters that will allow players to traverse land, sea, and air. And, as expected in any battle royale, players will need to gear up along the way with Common, Rare, and Epic weapons, gadgets, and armor.

Some of the best of that gear looks to be locked behind safes, strongboxes, vehicle lockups, resupply point objectives, and random supply drops that will take some effort and luck to access. In the trailer, it’s clear that the locations of this highly-valuable gear could quickly turn into the perfect location for an enemy squad to spring a trap.

Battlefield 5’s Firestorm will also offer its own small twist to the battle royale formula. Whereas in many battle royales, includingFortniteandApex Legends, once players are down they can do little more than retreat to cover, in Firestorm players get a few rounds in a sidearm with which to defend themselves and attempt to turn the situation around.

While thepopularity of battle royale games such asApex Legends,Fortnite, andCall of Duty’s Blackout continue with those games carving out their own place in the gaming landscape, time will tell how well players attach to this new battle royale fromBattlefield.

Battlefield 5is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Firestorm releases August 05, 2025.
