Apple unveiled its upcoming iPhone 12 during its annual reveal event today, and the device will come in four different models: the base iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini,iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max; each with their own technical specs and capabilities. However, all four will utilize the new A14 Biotic processor chip, and to showcase its capabilities Apple announced that Riot Games’League of Legends: Wild Riftwill be playable on iPhone 12 later this year.
Wild Riftis the dedicated, rebuilt mobile version ofLeague of Legendsannounced in October 2019 that is purportedly meant to expand Riot’s reach into Asian gaming markets, according to a report by Engadget last year. During the iPhone 12 presentation, Riot Games Executive Producer Michael Chow said the “insanely powerful” iPhone 12, in conjunction with 5G internet, makes this the “perfect time to bringLeagueto iOS.” He said greater graphical fidelity and FPS will be possible on Apple’s upcoming devices.

League of Legends: Wild Riftis currently hosting a closed betain the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan. This testing has primarily taken place on Android devices, according to an Engadget report published today, and a specific release date for the game on iPhone 12 was not provided during the announcement event.
The A14 Biotic is 50 percent faster than any competing phone on the market and has a neural engine capable of “11 trillion operations per second,” according to Apple. Between August 2019 and 2020,League of Legendswas the second most-viewed game on TwitchbehindFortnite, according to a report by UK retailer GAME, and Apple cites high viewership numbers during last year’s World Championship as one reason it is excited to have such a high-profile partner.
The 2020League of LegendsWorld Championship is currently happening through the end of October, and Riot has been putting out a number of in-game events for players to help celebrate the occasion. For example, the newALL OUT: Comeback event features virtual K-pop group K/DA, which is made up of characters fromLeague of Legends,including the soon-to-be-released Seraphine.
However, the major game developer is also consolidating its reach withLeague of Legendsin other areas.Riot Games recently closed its Australian operations, in-turn dissolving the Oceanic Pro League. Whether its venture into mobile spaces throughLeague of Legends: Wild Rifton iPhone 12 and other devices pays off in the long run will have to be seen as it becomes available.
